Computing in Architectural Design Summary

In reading Computing in Architectural Design I learned that computers began in the mid 1900’s, which is something I was not aware of. It amazes me to think of how far they have come since the beginning. Computers used to be the size of rooms and have small memory capacities. Now computers are getting smaller and immense amounts of memory. Programs were originally designed for design purposes, as well as use in the military. They started out in the automotive industry (to help with geometries) and moved into architectural design. Computers were originally for commercial use only but have since then moved highly into personal use as well. IBM PC’s and Macintosh were the first computer companies. CAD programs were developed to not only help design a building, but to show the client a 3D representation of what the finished product would look like. Overall, this article makes me appreciate the technology of the 21st century even more than I already did previously. We, as designers, are able to push our designs to extremes with the use of today’s technologies.
